Road to Emmaus
Light a candle and remember the presence of God is with you.
The season of Easter is not just one day. Like Lent, it is also a season. It lasts for 50 days so that we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus more than just once!
Place the road in front of you.
There were two disciples on a road walking from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus.
Place the two disciples on the road walking away from Jerusalem.
They were talking about all that had happened. The women had told them Jesus was alive, but it was very hard to believe.
Another person was walking along the road and joined in their conversation. The stranger asked them what they were talking about.
Place Jesus next to the disciples on the road.
“How do you not know?” one of the disciples asked.
The other interrupted saying, “Jesus was killed three days ago. You know Jesus? The one who was supposed to help Israel.”
His friend pushed him aside and added, “The prophet who had done many amazing and wonderful things!” The two disciples looked at each other. They were a little worried to share what the women had told them. They had not yet seen Jesus. It was very hard to believe.
The stranger then started to speak to them. He talked for a very long time agreeing that Jesus was the prophet who had done amazing and wonderful things. They should not doubt but believe.
As all three people arrived in Emmaus, the stranger decided to join them for a meal.
During this meal the stranger took break and broke it. (Pause.)
Take the table, bread, and cup and place in the middle of the three men.
And then… But… Wait… something had changed about this stranger. (Pause.)
The disciples began to remember and understand. Jesus had said earlier, “Take and eat. This is a promise to remember me.”
Do you know who the stranger was? Do you remember?
It was Jesus! He really was alive!
And then he mysteriously left.
Luke 24:30-32
(Common English Bible)
After he took his seat at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts on fire when he spoke to us along the road and when he
explained the scriptures for us?”
Family Prayer
There are so many ways to pray. This week’s prayer challenge is to write a family prayer that shares a time when something amazing happened to you or someone you know!
