Miriam

Light a candle and remember the presence of God is with you.
Cut out the pieces to help you tell this story.
There are times and places when women are treated as less important than men.
This is not right. God loves us all. (Pause.)
Yet, my name is still a part of God’s story.
Your name is also a part of God’s story. (Draw a heart with your finger.)
My name is MIRIAM.
Place Miriam in front of you.
My story is a part of a big event called the Exodus.
Take time to look at the Bible timeline.
My little brothers are Moses and Aaron. As a child, I helped Moses find a home with those in power. Aaron and I were Hebrew slaves and very poor. When Moses grew up, he returned to be with the Hebrew slaves. God gave Moses the ability to set all of us free from the evil rulers.
I love to dance!
I danced when we crossed the river to freedom.
I danced with the Hebrew people whom I loved and led alongside my brothers.
But there was one time that God stopped my dancing.
Aaron and I were frustrated with Moses. God heard our jealousy and shut me out of the community for seven days. During that time, I worried that the Hebrew people would leave and move on without me. But the people remembered my dancing. They remembered my love for them.
… … … … … Wait… … … … Wait… … … … Wait… … … … Wait… … … …
Wait… … … … Wait… … … …
They waited for me! I had waited for many years for God when we were in the land of Egypt. I had not waited alone, and those who waited in Egypt, waited for me in the wilderness.
God gives us people who will wait for us if we dance with them.
My name is Miriam. I am part of God’s story.

Numbers 12:1-3 (Common English Version)
Although Moses was the most humble person in all the world, Miriam and Aaron started complaining, “Moses had no right to marry that woman from Ethiopia! Who does he think he is? The Lord has spoken to us, not just to him.” The Lord heard their complaint.
I wonder…
… how Miriam felt when she was sick for seven days?
… how she felt growing up a slave?
… how she felt when the people waited for her?
… why she loved to dance?
